Harmonics Control

Harmonics Control in Power Systems

Harmonics are unwanted frequency components introduced into power systems by non-linear loads such as power electronics, arc furnaces, and adjustable speed drives. These harmonic currents and voltages can have detrimental effects including:

  • Equipment overheating and failure
  • Increased neutral conductor currents
  • Communication and control interference
  • Circuit breaker tripping

Filtering Solutions:

  • Passive filters (cost-effective for specific frequencies)
  • Active filters (dynamic wideband compensation)
  • Hybrid systems (combines passive & active)
  • Harmonic-mitigating transformers

Effective harmonics control through proper system design, mitigation strategies, and continuous monitoring ensures power quality and system reliability.

Power Factor Correction

Power Factor Correction: Optimize Your Electrical System

What is Power Factor? Power factor is a measure of how efficiently an electrical system uses the available power. It's the ratio of real power (measured in kilowatts) to apparent power (measured in kilovolt-amperes). A power factor of 1.0 indicates that all the supplied power is used effectively, while a lower power factor means energy is being wasted.

Why is Power Factor Important? Low power factor can have significant impacts on your business:

  • Higher utility bills – Utility companies often charge penalties for low power factor
  • Wasted energy – Low power factor means inefficient energy usage
  • Decreased system capacity – Reduces available power for your systems
  • Potential equipment damage – Can cause motors and transformers to overheat

Power Factor Correction to the Rescue: PFC improves power factor to optimal levels (typically 0.95 or higher) through strategic placement of capacitor banks or power electronics devices in your electrical system.

Benefits of Power Factor Correction:

  • Reduced utility costs – Avoid power factor penalties
  • Increased system capacity – Free up power for your infrastructure
  • Improved equipment lifespan – Reduce strain on motors and transformers
  • Enhanced energy efficiency – Cut down on wasted electricity

Voltage Optimization Solutions

Voltage Optimization involves operating an electrical network at the lower level of the accepted voltage range. Due to distribution inefficiencies, utilities generally supply power to consumers at voltages higher than rated equipment voltages.

The problems associated with overvoltage include:

  • Energy loss due to voltage-related (resistive losses) and joule losses in the distribution network
  • Increased reactive demand, hence high Apparent demand (kVA)
  • Reduction in equipment life and increased maintenance costs
  • System breakdowns in extreme cases

IcoPower-Esco, with the help of its sister OEM Icopower, provides energy efficiency solutions through voltage optimization by utilizing ICO F Voltage Optimizers.

Key Benefits of ICO F:

  • Verifiable electric energy and demand savings
  • Harmonics control (reduction of THDi by up to 10%)
  • Continuous data logging for accurate carbon reduction reporting
  • Plant protection from overvoltage and increased equipment longevity

Variable Speed Drives

Variable speed drives are used to control motors in various applications. A VFD varies the speed of a motor by varying the frequency. The drive controls motor acceleration and deceleration during starting or stopping, respectively.

The synchronous speed of a motor is directly proportional to the AC power frequency. A VFD modulates the frequency to match the synchronous speed with the load requirement of the electric motor.

Applications:

  • Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  • Variable Air Volume Systems (VAV)
  • Fan and Pump Control
  • Water Pumping and Industrial centrifugal applications

Additional applications include Air Compressor Control and various process motor applications across industrial facilities.

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs)

Icopower Esco installs air source heat pumps to help clients save on energy used in heating of water. With ASHPs, savings of up to 60% are achievable. The pumps absorb renewable heat from the environment to heat water thereby replacing traditional hot water boilers.

Electricity is used by the pump as it compresses the liquid to increase its temperature. It then condenses back into a liquid to release its stored heat. Less electrical energy is used in the process as compared to using the traditional boilers.
